Not what I had expected

Honestly, this novel might not even rate the three stars I have given it, but I was feeling generous.

This book reads a great deal like someone's home MechWarrior role-playing game. The main character starts out with nothing, and attempts to recruit his former neighbors and family members to his cause. The rejection leads him to Solaris VII, where he must fight to gain the materiel he needs for his personal vendetta. He is there but a few days before leaving for Outreach to find a contract for his new merc unit, and to recruit more personnel. Everything works out relatively neat and tidy. It just does not read like a good novel, with the convenience of events and the results.

Also, given the back cover text, I had expected more along the lines of a Solaris-set novel, but the story stays on that world for a comparatively short time. Much more time is spent on the world that the unit is contracted to defend. And the antagonism there again reads like something from a poorly-designed RPG campaign, with the local strife resulting in an action by that planet's leaders unlike any other in the Battletech universe. The story climaxes with combat against Clan invaders, with the occasional pointless death thrown in, I assume to highlight the random savagery of war, but seemingly tacked on as an afterthought.

I was really disappointed in this novel. Note, however, that the sequel is vastly superior and very much worth the read, while this one is sure to languish on my shelf without getting a second read.

Uhhh, wow... If you like GOOD books, then stay away.

Alright, how do I say this simply?

It seems as if this book was written by a 14 year old, unfortunately...
It seems the other might have had multiple personalities while writing. It has multiple errors and a child-like story. The characters alone, such as "rose" the main character, are very poorly developed, seeming at one moment to be very intellectual, and the next, a complete retard attacking a cop, because of a sarcastic comment. Not only that, but conversation dialog is extremely hard to follow, for the lack of mention of who's talking, so you are left to guess at which one is speaking at which time. And the descriptions? Oh well, constantly switches from 3rd person, to 1st person, back to 3rd person, and to mix it up, let's throw another character in 1st person in the same paragraph.

Just, i'm 1/4th through the book, and the only reason I'm even Considering finishing this child-like book, is for the information regarding the battletech timeline.

If you are looking to further your battletech knowledge, read it...
Otherwise looking for a good battletech adventure??
Go read the Jade Phoenix Trilogy...
That's a series, anyone can enjoy.

One of the better Battletech books, but the sequal is better

Despite what some other reviewers will tell you, this one ranks right up their with Stackpole. Good character development, and tying together different elements of a character. The desensitization of war caused on Solaris is covered well, sometimes a bit too obviously. The battle is interesting, and the story of Turkyyaid shows a 'soldier's eye' view. The battle against the Clans is a little too easy towards the end, and I regret not telling a little more about Comstar. Some parts of the good old Order must be more nonsecular than others for him to be able to leave that easily. This is well-written, and is necessary to enjoy D.R.T., but the second one is better. I only wish their was a third Black Thorn story.

A Must Read.

This book was required reading as I went through the process of converting to Judaism but I would recommend this book to anyone. The story of the Jews is inspiring and moving and this book captures the spirit of this amazing people so well, delivering the facts without too much sentimentality. From the complexities of the creation of the State of Israel to the constant expulsion from country after country this book is surprisingly throrough and yet easily accessible. I defy anyone not to feel inspired after reading it.

The expression, familiarity breeds contempt, is all too familiar. But in relationship with one’s spouse, is it not a hindrance for forming a good chemistry between husband and wife? This book analyses this in detail and suggests an array of steps to overcome the fear of intimacy. Many past studies are quoted to give clarity to the facts mentioned. The author starts with trust and elucidates how trust can be built between the partners without causing any issues to the relationship. Obviously, past experiences and individual’s environment have a say on one’s behavior. The chapter “Making peace with past” is explained beautifully with relevant facts. One has to overcome the traumas of the past to live in the present. Overall, this book is an excellent read for all who face similar issues.

The fear of intimacy!

Love is not only hard to find, but strange as it may seem, it can be even more difficult to accept and tolerate. Most of us say that we want to find a loving partner, but many of us have deep-seated fears of intimacy that make it difficult to be in a close relationship. The experience of real love often threatens our self-defenses and raises our anxiety as we become vulnerable and open ourselves up to another person. This leads to a fear of intimacy.

In simple words, intimacy is the ability to share the most intimate parts of your being with another person for the purpose of developing a deeper connection or a closer relationship. I picked up this book as a way to understand the behavior of someone close to me, and I was amazed at how much of it I could apply to myself. The book offered so much insight into people and their behaviors. This book has something for everyone that is experiencing some form of difficulty with cultivating healthy intimate relationships.

Hot on the heels of the bestseller He's Just Not That Into You comes this funny, forthright response from author and sex therapist Kerner. The author of the sex guide She Comes First and the "dating doctor" for Lifetime TV, Kerner takes up the cause of "Sex and the City" women everywhere, urging ladies to dump the "in-the-meantime" men and raise their standards on the husband hunt. Kerner's book will appeal to the chick lit audience, with his sassy quizzes and blunt language, as when he writes that women settle on a mediocre boyfriend because "they like having their egos and (and lower parts) stroked." How unfortunate, then, that Kern's logic is often so sloppy. Can it really always be true, as he writes, that being married "is harder than being single, even in the best of circumstances" or that "If women were really disposed to have sex like men, they'd be greater consumers of porn and prostitution"? The book equivocates in trying to promote sexual freedom while encouraging emotional responsibility, and all the laugh lines don't quite hide the fact that the entire book's wisdom is essentially contained in the subtitle. A final chapter, written jointly by Kerner and his wife, does stand out for its personality and wit. Here's hoping they team up for a whole book next time. Meanwhile, this one's sure to do brisk business among singletons.

I bought this book for my girlfriend who struggles with the wrong men. As her bestie I try to give advise as to what I see wrong with each guy's behavior and why they run. This little book will help her see the pattern early and realize he's really not for her either!

Wake up and smell your SELF EMPOWERMENT

This book kicks "He's not that into You" firmly in the crotch. Thank the Good Lord that someone finally did.

The first chapters explain why it's a bad idea for women to have casual sex. DUH!!! For me and my friends, this is as true as the sky is blue. Having sex like a man is a myth. I cannot fathom why people are watching "Sex and the City" and believing it. Ian Kerner, the author, explains in scientific terms why it's not likely for women to have sex that is casual as well as enjoyable. He goes into hormones, the way other mammals act, etc. This book suggests that having "sex like a man" is UN-empowering, despite what your local commando feminist might say.

Note to the audience: For those readers who are squeamish about sex and masturbation, the first couple of chapters are going to be uncomfortable. If you're not having sex, this book is probably not useful for you. Also, if you have problems finding a guy, this book is not for you. However, if you find that you are dating guys that you're not that into, this book is for you. Also, if you're a parent and your daughter is going away to college, I'd recommend this book for your daughter. It might keep her away from the frat houses. Believe me, it happens, and it's better for her to get a good whiff of reality before she is out on her own.

The second and third couple of chapters explain why you should not seriously date someone who you're not that into. I don't think that these chapters are as good as the first, but I identify with dating people who I am not that into. It's a waste of time. You know from the very beginning that you're not going to marry them, and spending time by yourself is so much more enjoyable and empowering.

Overall, I think that this book is a four star book, but I am giving it five simply because it kicks some butt.

A Must-Read for Single Women...

I picked up this book yesterday and couldn't put it down. I just wish it had come out sooner -- like when I started my downward spirial of dating guys that I wasn't that into when I graduated from college.

The book is easy-to-read and funny. Forget "The Rules." This book provides useful, non-preachy advice. For some funny reason, I felt like Dr. Kerner was cheering me on from the sidelines. Definitely worth buying. Don't judge this one by the picture on its cover....

Full of historical detail

Mine is a new 1975 edition (which was a small fraction of the new price). It is as much a history of the world--and an incredibly detailed one--as a history of architecture. It opens each of its 40 chapters with a discussion of a civilization or era, then describes the buildings very matter-of-factly. Sometimes opinions emerge: Louis Kahn is cited as an example of a flash-in-the-pan; FLLW's Guggenheim is criticized as impractical.

The photos are top quality B/W, often very old. Its real strength is early architecture; by chapter 35, it is only finishing up the Renaissance. The authors are so knowledgeable, the writing so polished after 18 editions, all others pale by comparison.

I don't think there's much of a market for these books outside of libraries, but those who read it will marvel at its erudition.

About the Author
John Wells is a Professor of Phonetics at University College London. His interests centre on the phonetic and phonological description of languages but also extend to lexicography and language teaching. He directs UCL's annual Summer Course in English Phonetics. He is a frequent contributor to BBC radion (R2, R4, R5, BBC English). Based in Britain at UCL throughout his career, he has over the years given invited lectures in many different countries throughout the world. His best known publications are Accents of English (3 vols, Cambridge University Press 1982) and Longman Pronunciation Dictionary (Pearson Education, second edition 2000).

A must for those who want to speak good English

this dictionary is comprehensive enough,it includes both American and British pronunciations. I may say it is very useful for non-native speakers as their accents may combine several ones. Ordinary dictionaries cannot help much as language is changing every day and even in Received Pronunciation(RP), there may be several pronunciations for a word. And the older generation, middle generation as well as young generation speak differently. Ordinary dictionaries usually just include one pronunciation. Collins Cobuild dictionary is better in a way that it provides more variations. But this variation is not comprehensive enough. If you want to buy a pronunciation dictionary, either this or English Pronouncing Dictionary(Cambridge University Press) is your choice.

An Invaluable Resource

As a theatre voice & speech trainer, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. It is a must-have for all actors. It deals well with both English and American pronunciations and the variations of word pronunciations. I feel it is probably the best of the pronunciation dictionaries, even though it has shortcomings in it's distinction between the consonant R and vowel R-coloring.

Longman Pronunciation Dictionary

This book is a must for everyone seriously interested in English pronunciation. This book shows the pronunciation of what might be typically used by newscasters. However, the idea that a person can learn to speak 'good English' is insulting to millions of people who are very proud of their own regional dialects, which may be considered by non-native speakers of English as 'bad'. If you want to learn to speak 'good' English, hop in a time machine and go back to a time when 'standards' were more severely enforced. (Say, Axis countries in the late thirties.)
