Gentle and heart warming

This is the ninth instalment in Alexander McCall Smith's series about Isabel Dalhousie, editor of an ethics magazine and occasional sleuth. The last couple of books in the series were somewhat of a disappointment to me, but I enjoyed this one considerably more. Whilst the plot is as slim as ever - centering on Isabel's efforts to assist in the retrieval of a stolen painting - the book weaves its gentle charm over you as you read it. The "action" is interspersed with Isabel's musings on subjects as diverse as how to deal with rudeness in others, with whether we owe more to the people who live near us than people abroad and how to deal with conflict in marriages. I think what I like most about this series is the way it gets you thinking about the simple ways that you can live a more considerate life, about the importance of manners and kindness, without feeling that you are being preached to.

While many familiar characters make an appearance in the book - Grace has a falling out with Isabel and Eddie has romantic problems - others are barely mentioned, if at all. Cat is largely absent (hooray! no unsuitable boyfriends for once), as are Professors Dove and Lettuce. I was grateful for this, as it made the book feel less formulaic. I remain unconvinced by Isabel's relationships with Jamie and Charlie. Neither to me feel realistic, but at least her relationship with Jamie is made up of a little more this time round than just thinking about how lucky she is to have him.

I'm giving the book 3 stars because I liked, it but never found it terribly compelling and I suspect that in a week's time I'll be struggling to remember any of it. Having said that, I think that fans of the series will definitely enjoy it.

Another little gem.

I was so pleased that Alexander didn't axe the Dalhousie series after Isabel got married. I have found every book in the series a joy to read and love the way the author manages to weave his own beliefs through the characters without being long winded and pious. I guess I enjoy all his books because I subscribe to almost everything he has to say about life. If only the majority of the world were like minded.

a disappointment

This book was a disappointment. I usually like Alexander McCall Smith's work, but this one was hard to get through. The story is constantly derailed by Isabel's musings about just about everything but the plot. The main mystery of who stole the painting is never solved. The issue with Eddie and his girlfriend just disappears. And I can not understand Isabel's problem with Grace teaching her son mathematics. All in all a waste of time and money.

About the Author
A. J. Cronin was born in Scotland in 1896. In 1914 he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Glasgow University, but his studies were interrupted by war service as a surgeon sub-lieutenant in the Navy. He graduated in 1919, and was later appointed Medical Inspector of Mines. He practised medicine in London until ill-health made him return to literature, and he wrote many hugely successful novels, including the famous Dr Finlay series. He was married with three sons, and died in 1981.

Great book for high schoolers.

I read this book as a teenager almost 30 years ago. Still great! Even if the story line quite predictable the writing is amazing.

Story from the 30s is still a Great Read

I picked up this book because it was mentioned in my great-grandmother's diary from 1941. Written in the 30s, it tells the tale of a young Scottish doctor in the 20s, as he goes from a small-town doctor in a rough situation to a well-paid London doctor with a fancy office.
The story's written with intelligence, as the doctor ponders various ways to deal with the bureaucracy he faces. He deals with incompetent doctors, old doctors that have no desire to learn new treatments, young doctors more concerned with money and prestige than patient care.
And, as he gets absorbed into the system, the doctor begins to be lured in by the money. He starts to prescribe the 'easy' solution to patients, even if it's not the right answer, so that they're happy and he gets more cash. He does finally realize, in the end, that working for the patients is more important than gaining lots of cash, but only after some hard lessons.
I have a few small complaints with the story. One is that the wife could have been a really interesting character, but she's a little flat. She is sad when he becomes money-hungry, and draws back, but that's it. She was a schoolteacher when he met her, and it's made clear that she's very intelligent. But still she just sort of goes along with him, making his meals, wishing things could be better, but far be it for her to actually help out. She tries to get his friends to see him one night to bring back his old ways, but when that fails, "ah well".
My other complaint is that he slides far too easy from a passionate patient-first attitude into a "cash is nice" mentality. But that was necessary for the plot to progress.
Definitely a great book to read to learn about life in the 20s to 40s, from the small towns of Wales to the busy streets of London. Interesting details about the damage that mines caused to the lungs of the mineworkers, and the ways that doctors worked with each other and treated their patients. A great read!

Ground School Between The Covers!

[[VIDEOID:mo3U4L7UZC62NE0]]Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook is a complete ground school course. Everything you'll need to know to pass the FAA written exam is in this book. It's chock full of photos, diagrams, and charts, as well as plenty of well-written pages. I used it in conjunction with the materials at my flight school and passed the written with a 92%. I found the examples in this book much easier to grasp and retain than those provided by the Cessna course from my flight school. Thus, the book gave me what I needed in a better format. Great Book!

I studied and passed the Private Pilot Knowledge Test using the FAA Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and the King Schools Private Pilot DVD Course, but there were a lot of things I still didn't completely understand. Rod Machado's book is a pleasure to read, because I'm finally understanding those things. The illustrations really help with the explanations, and I enjoy the humor. I told some of the stories to my CFI, and he thought they were really funny. It helps me to hear stories about other student pilots (and sometimes pilots) messing up--makes me see I'm not the only one who does dumb stuff. One story I liked: Rod tells his students to announce to ATC on the initial call-up that they're students. One time the controller answered, "That's OK. I'm a student controller. We can mess each other up."

Great training book

I would highly recommend this book by Rod Machado. If you are a prospective student or just want a new way to have troublesome areas of your flight training explained to you Rod's the man. This book kept me awake when other training books put me to sleep.

Amazing story from the Very Old "Old World" to Modern America

I bought this for my wife who was from Philadelphia and raised on Scrapple. She read it almost non-stop until finishing. I also found it fascinating. We both had so many misconceptions about this food product and its variations. We buy Scrapple (Panhas) when traveling to Eastern Pennsylvania on vacations where there are many brands to choose from. Here in Pittsburgh it can be found but not in the variety as South Eastern Pa. Since reading the book, we have successfully made our first batch of homemade Scrapple and plan to make some additional varieties. We look forward to traveling to North Carolina to try the relative of Scrapple - Livermush.
Now here is a teaser - My wife and I had always believed Scrapple was named from the meat scraps used in its production. It is NOT! Read to book to see how it received its name.

The Last Word on Scrapple

I have lived in Pennsylvania for more than three decades, although I am originally from New England. I love regional foods -- the more traditional, the better. It is getting harder to find traditional regional cuisine -- what with the fast-foodization of everyday restaurants and the trendoids chasing after lemon grass, truffle oil and frozen nitrogen chilled burgers. It's ridiculous. I've been a confirmed scrapple eater and frequently order it in local restaurants, although few cook it crunchy enough for my taste. Most of the Pennsylvania Dutch restaurants that used to exist in this area are gone now.

Real American regional cooking exists, maybe not in the New York Times or foodie magazines, but in farmers markets, family kitchens and the remaining locally owned restaurants. Scrapple is a backbone of traditional American country cooking, basically fried mush made of ground meat, meat broth, spices and corn meal. It has a history stretching back into medieval Europe, and was brought over by immigrants, revised and adapted to American country life. It's not "Philadelphia" scrapple although thats where many tourists sample it for the first time -- it is a staple of eastern and central Pennsylvania and stretches down through the farms and country restaurants of West Virginia and the Appalachians.

This book is recommended for anyone who is curious about traditional foods. It contains a number of excellent recipes, although I usually buy scrapple at the supermarket ("Rapa" brand scrapple is my favorite), or at local farmers markets.

A Culinary Treatise of the First Water. Buy It.

`Country Scrapple, An American Tradition' by the esteemed culinary writer, William Woys Weaver is the kind of book which every major food technique deserves to have written about it. It glorifies a humble, truly American product with scholarship and a respect rarely seen outside the rarefied worlds of wine and cheese writing.

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has read Weaver's best known book, `Sauerkraut Yankees' on the more general subject of Pennsylvania Dutch culinary traditions. Weaver has a touch that rivals the very best culinary scholars such as Elizabeth David, John Thorne, and Paula Wolfert. He is the mid-Atlantic answer to Thorne's New England perspective and the Southern culinary voice so loudly heard from Jim Villas and others.

The most revealing statement I found in this book is that scrapple can easily be seen as simply a `black polenta', as two of its most important ingredients are corn meal and a meat stock. To back up this perspective, Weaver begins with the story of scrapple's European beginnings in northern Germany and its strong similarities to another high-falutin' food preparation, liver pate. Unlike polenta and pate', scrapple has never lost its humble associations as a poor man's dish, garnered from the very last remains of hog butchery.

Part of the great charm in my reading this book lies in the fact that much of the action takes place within a 65 mile radius of my home in Bethlehem, the land of the Moravians, Quakers, Mennonites, and the Amish, and the site of scrapple central, the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. On top of this is the charm and interest of Weaver's linguistic research, citing one of my major personal heroes, the bard of Baltimore, H. L. Menchen. This is also a clue to the fact that scrapple, under several other names, has a much broader range than southeastern Pennsylvania. It has also gone under the name of Panhas, Pon-hoss, and Panhaus in the lands beyond Lancaster County and while grits has entered the pantheon of classic American foods, scrapple and its close relatives such as Pashofa have been a staple of low-cost eating in the south for as long as hogs have been raised and slaughtered there.

The book is so rich in detail that I even picked up an obscure fact about hog butchery in that the pig's viscera are actually divided into `haslet'; the heart, lungs and liver and `offal', everything else in the viscera. This is probably not arbitrary, as the heart, lungs and liver are probably the three most blood rich organs, and blood is a common ingredient in many types of German sausage, of which scrapple is a close relative.

About half of this book is dedicated to this scholarly introduction. The second half is dedicated to recipes for cooking and making scrapple. Being a native of the Pennsylvania Dutch outskirts and a fairly able home cook, one would think that knowing the right technique for cooking scrapple is in my genes. It isn't. I follow James Beard's recipe whenever I make it and wonder why I'm unhappy with the result. The natural instinct is to fry it as if it were a veal cutlet. Unfortunately, it simply doesn't have the backbone of even a very thinly pounded cutlet. The secret is in bringing the thinly greased pan to a high heat, turning the heat way down, and then adding the scrapple. Unlike Beard, Weaver makes no mention of flouring the scrapple, which, if his low heat technique is used, is probably unnecessary.

Now we get down to the business of making scrapple and its condiments. Weaver provides twenty different recipes, fifteen of which are for scrapple and five are for scrapple condiments, leading off with the all time Dutch favorite, apple butter. The fifteen recipes for scrapple include both vegetarian and kosher recipes so everyone can get into the act. While about half are from scrapple central, several are from the south and the mid-west.

The book ends with a set of notes and a bibliography that would make John Thorne envious. It also has a list of suppliers for both scrapple and scrapple making supplies that make most books on oriental cooking look stingy.

This book may not be for everyone, but if you are a serious foodie with an interest in American cuisine, this book is easily the equal to better than Villas works on Southern cuisine.

Very highly recommended.
