A slightly dated but VERY worthwhile audio guide!

A friend of mine loaned this book to me around 1991 and I have yet to thank him enough. I was buying my first stereo and I found this book to be an incredibly informative companion to the decision making process. It doesn't rank or rate specific gear, but rather discusses the ideas and ideals behind quality gear. It also spends a great deal of time explaining how misleading many of the terms and features of certain audio gear are to quality sound. It explains why some of the best amplifiers are the ones with the fewest knobs or features and how the listener should judge the gear when testing it out.

This book was released over 20 years ago when CDs were just about ready to replace vinyl and tapes as the preferred audio medium, so it spends a great deal of time discussing turntables. While vinyl has come back in vogue to a certain group of people, most people will find this information trivial at best. The truth is, though, that a properly set up turntable with clean vinyl still provides a superior audio experience - the problem is setting up a turntable can be a real nightmare.

The book has a great deal of relevant info regarding receivers/amplifiers, cd players, and speakers. It dispels many of the myths regarding popular speaker designs and renders their concepts completely irrelevant. It also points out why equalizers and other gee-whiz features do more to cover up the audio than make it sound better. While I was hesitant to believe much of this at first, it was proven right almost every single time.

While I generally have disdain for most audiophiles for their snobbery, I have the utmost respect for this book's attitude. It tries to show that respecting and enjoying a good stereo isn't outside the realm of the average joe... a good system costs far less than you think. It is a little outdated, but it's still a very valuable and accessible read with plenty of great information and useful concepts. If you can find a copy (it took me a few years to find one), it's well worth the money.

Excellent and Informative Book

Published in 1987 and out of print, this book still reigns as one of the best sources of information for audiophiles, and especially for lovers of vinyl. It was written in that peculiar period in the mid 1980s when digital sound was just starting to overtake analog sound in popularity, yet the author still had the wise insight to state her preference for analog over digital playback, which was definitely going against the grain at the time (1987), when many were dumping their LP collections and turntables for CDs and CD players. The book goes into great detail regarding turntable and cartridge setup, and that information alone makes this book worth purchasing. There is also a very informative section on the amplification stage, as well as an interesting section on analog tape decks.

She makes one statement on page 17 that I found amusing: "The analog LP, while indeed passing into recording history, has yet to be eclipsed by any other medium*..........*Except reel-to-reel tape".

I never considered reel-to-reel tapes to have better sound than a vinyl LP played on a decent turntable system, but maybe I'm missing something there. Certainly cassette tapes were much more popular than reel-to-reel tapes by the mid 1980s (though reel-to-reel taping of LPs was very popular in the 1970s), so I found her statement to be odd. LPs are here to stay, but I don't consider the same for analog reel-to-reel tape!

Unless you are looking for info concerning the latest digital audio technology (and if that's the case, a book published in 1987 is not where you should be looking), there is nothing dated about the material in this book. It is especially recommended for those looking for info involving analog audio technology.

Overall, an awesome book full of useful info some 27 years after it was published. Highly recommended.

The best series EVER!

Let me start off with I am an avid reader! I love books. A few of my favorite authors (who can choose just one) are James Rollins, Timothy Zahn and Nora Roberts and....Denise Daisy. This series is by far the best series I think I've ever read, these books need to be in book stores everywhere. Denise needs a great publisher and editor and a movie or TV series deal (as long as they stay true to the story). There's so much to discuss I'm not sure where to start! I got The Secrets of Moonshine a few years ago for free and the second I finished reading it I bought Haythem Secrets in the Rubble! There is everything to this story, secrets, intrigue, heartbreak, mystery all centered around this epic romance! I crave for more romance scenes between Bronwyn and Travis but the ones there are, are truly so powerful and amazing! I love all the twists and turns! I love where the story left off and was at the edge of my seat the last few pages hoping it wouldn't end with...I don't want to use spoilers here but I wanted it to end well and it did! I cannot disagree more with the reviewer that says this books runs in circles and gets you nowhere...I'm not sure they read the same book as I did! I do get a little frustrated with Bronwyn at times for not opening up with Travis a little more and also for not defending herself a little better with the whole Connic thing. But, I love love and the heart of this series is based on the most powerful force on earth, love. However, I do have a negative thing or two to say and I realized when I purchased the book, from other reviews (without spoilers :)), that this wasn't the last book. And that was almost disappointing, maybe disheartening would be a better word, but only because it took WAY too long for book #3 to come out, I mean years too long. When I finished book #2 I wrote on my calendar when book #3 was supposed to be out (a few months at that point) and then it was delayed and delayed and delayed. If the story wasn't so amazing I would've been done with the author. I literally banned her other books (to no one's knowledge but my own) until the conclusion came out, so I liked her Facebook page and check in periodically. When I Realized that the this books was finally out, I re-read the first two books. And I read all three books in under a week, they are all that good! This is an amazing author, her imagination is endless but my criticism is the length between books. So now I am concerned that we will be waiting another 3 years for the next conclusion and I LOVE series normally! I love staying with characters that I adore and the more books the merrier for me. Or how Janet Chapman has created her characters so that there are so many but somehow they're connected so you can "check in" with them from time to time, love it! That is the downfall to Denise Daisy is literally the length it takes to get the next book out, I understand that life happens but we're talking several YEARS and I feel fairly comfortable in believing that she's lost fans because of it and for reasons maybe as simple as they just plum forgot because it took too long to get the next book out. I went long periods of time in between checking and wasn't even sure I wanted to read this book once I found out there would be another! But I cannot stay away from the series, it's amazing! Please Ms. Daisy, do not keep us waiting for years again. I will probably read all your other books after the conclusion of this series (I'm a pretty loyal fan normally)! And I agree with the reviewer that says she's in love but cannot decide if it's Travis or Falcon! :) But the love story between Bronwyn and Travis is so phenomenal and I cannot wait for more! And give us a few more tender moments in the next one! YAY!

Denise Daisy - 3yrs between books and now another one to wait on

Hugely disappointed/disgusted/discouraged at this point! Let me tell you why. I purchased this book two months ago having waited, as so many others, first patiently for it to be released and then as the three years went by, more and more to the point of losing interest in whether it came out at all or not. I had been so in love with this series. I couldn't begin to tell you how much I was looking forward to reading this book. When I saw it was actually out already (I had actually gave up looking), my interest peaked enough I decided to purchase it. I started reading it. None of it was familiar at all, but I kept on. After reading several chapters, it was apparent that I was going to have to reread the other books to familiarize myself again with the series. I didn't have time for that, and had to put it aside. Two months later, and I still don't have the time, and after reading a few reviews, I see there is ANOTHER book coming... and who knows how long before that one will be done being written! Will we have to wait another 3 years on that one? Ugh! Plus I read one reviewers comments about the editing problems and I had noticed them myself, (something that distracts me also!) At this point, I don't want to pick this book up at all. I might as well wait until the final(?) book comes out, and then reread the first two and then the others. Right now I'll give this book a pass. Miss Daisy, I'm giving you a 1 star for now. You dragged out writing this book, leaving tidbits, but promising you'd have the book out ' very soon' so many times on Facebook, I actually stopped following you there. Once I get around to reading all the books, (I guess.. dragging out my review), I'll update it, and let readers know how much I actually liked the book. Knowing how well the characters were in the past two, I am sure I will love it. But seeing as I have to wait for who knows how long for your next book, we'll just have to wait and see! Btw.. This is the 1st time and hopefully the only time I will ever encounter giving a review like this. To me this sucks, but then having a book I was really looking forward to, get drawn out so long before finally showing up, sucked too. I think seeing the author place tidbits on FB and her saying 'It's coming along great and almost done. It will be out by ...' (and giving a new date every 6 months or so, while she did her radio shows and talk circuits and the movie thing, got to be too much going on to finish her book promises. I guess that's the way it is in this 'I can have it all' age! ..HEY ..Life happens, and Congratulations and continued success and all that! I just don't feel like being led on like a pack of sheep. (Your saying this book will be done by this date over and over again and dragging it out for 3 yrs.) I really had to have liked the first two books to have purchased this third one and still be willing to await the next one, even without reading this one until it comes out. If the next book takes too long though, I plan on giving the series a definite pass! I'm not waiting years more down the road to read the conclusion to this story.

At long last, the third chapter of the Moonshine series are available and it simply does not disappoint! I knew there will be a final chapter, therefore I did not expect the book to end completely. I found that it reveals most of the secrets, but still leaves enough questions for the final chapter to be looking forward to! I enjoy the way the story flows and the surprises of every part of the secret - it is simply something you cannot predict at all. I have given up trying to guess what is going to happen, because I have never read a more unique story before! It is as if the author's imagination simply has no limits and she has such a fantastic way to tell the story, a person can simply not put the book down!

This book starts where the second book left off, and Bronwyn is in the other dimension. Everything unfolds and the secret is being revealed bit by bit, until you gasp at the huge impact the secret had on all the people of Moonshine, and Travis above all.

If I must give a bit of criticism it will only be because I am struggling with timelines (maybe my brain is trying to figure out too much of this fictional story). I seem to find contradicting information as to when exactly did Bronwyn and Travis separate, how long was it before she returned to our dimension as a baby and when exactly did she transport Moonshine to this dimension. Because it almost seems as if Moonshine only transported after she was born in our dimension and started to write about Moonshine again ... yet her cottage in Moonshine where she found the book of redemption is said to be 200 years old...

I do however believe that all will come together in the last book and I look forward to the last book in the series. This series will be a keeper for many read-overs to come, because there is no other book that can transport you into another dimension with all its beauty like this one!

This book provides the most concise, accessible account yet available of modern Western cultural and social explorations of other forms or aspects of life that are devalued or coded as unacceptable, even unthinkable, in the modern ethos. After discussing modernity as a cultural and political project associated with notions of 'progress' and the shaping of body experiences through the 'civilizing' of behaviour, the author describes how the body seeks to go beyond the conventional - and characteristically male-oriented - pieties of modern 'rationality' to uncover these 'other' dimensions, involving the carnivalesque, the 'primitive', madness, nature, sexuality and aspects of the feminine. These are shown to hold a powerful fascination for the modern imagination, and to provide potent resources for transgression, conflict and nostalgia. Satellite Sam is set in the early days of television. Themes that run through the story include corruption, racism, depravity, the abuse of power, the secrets that destroy careers, and the violent acts that men and women will take to keep their secrets hidden. The setting is steeped in realism and infused with noir. There’s plenty of sex and violence but it is overlaid with a story of surprising depth and complexity. All of that is showcased in the third and final volume of this saga.

The story demands rereading just to keep the characters straight. I suspect that the nuance and subtlety will make the story even more engaging on a second or third read.

Howard Chaykin’s art is instantly recognizable. Its grittiness suits the noir sensibility perfectly. Rated R for really good, but you might want to hide it from the kids.

A tawdry story taking place in the early days of television has a pretty decent finish

'Satellite Sam Volume Three: Satellite Sam and the Limestone Caves of Fire' finishes up the series by collecting issues 11 to 15. Script is by Matt Fraction with art by Howard Chaykin.

It's a rough story from the early days of television. There is blackmail, corruption, racism, violence and broken dreams. It's also an R-Rated series for the previously mentioned violence and the nudity. It's the story of a son who wants to learn about his father no matter how sordid.

It's rough like a James Ellroy movie or the movie L.A. Confidential. If the cover isn't warning enough, this one is not for the kids. I thought the story meandered a bit, but came in for a nice finish. The art by Chaykin isn't my favorite, but it fits the characters and the period they are in. The book includes an interview with the creators, alternate covers, and character bios that were included. The character bios (or at least one of them) might have been nice to have at the beginning of the book.

Kara McKormick wants to be a star! She's a seventeen-year-old girl who is known for being a contestant on "The Book of Love" which you can read about in Krista's first novel, "First Date". In this novel, Kara tries out for a variety show, "Teens Rock". Unbeknownst to the ten girls who are competing against each other, they must impress their housemother, Flora. When "America's Next Star", Chad Beacon, decides to take on acting, his parents demand his co-star be a Christian, Flora, their assistant, poses as the girls' housemother. This was such an amazing book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! There was more to this novel than the average "follow your dreams"; the story had a clear, Christian message, and I loved that Krista wasn't afraid to express Christianity in this novel. I also loved the relationships in this novel: Kara & Addy, Kara & Chad, Chad & Jonathon, and Addy & Jonathon). Despite the fact that this novel was loosely based on the story of Issac and Rebekah in Genesis 24, it wasn't overly relegious; it was still fun, enjoyable, and showcased struggles without jamming one's beliefs down your throat. I love reading a good Christian book every once in awhile, because it relaxes, strengthens, and grounds me; it's a reminder of my faith. I think everyone should read this novel, even if you're not a believer; it puts things in perspective for you!

In the World Starring Me?

My most recent selection from Book Sneeze is Starring Me, a fictional young adult novel written by Krista McKee. This book is the follow up to First Date, although each is its own unique story. The characters cross over, but Starring Me is its own story.

Kara is a young, hopeful, wanna be actress who is selected to be one of 10 girls to "audition" for a variety show. The exact details of the show, including the costar, are kept secret from the girls trying out.

The exact details revolve around Chad - the latest winner of an American Idol type show who, after only a year, is already tired of the teen heartthrob lifestyle. When he and his parents are pitched the idea for a variety show, they set some ground rules of their own. Chad's parents insist their son's costar must be a Christian, desiring the girl to be uplifting to his spiritual walk.

For me, the book was only meh. The story line didn't contain twists, turns, or anything surprising/exciting. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed the author's writing style. I think its unfair of me to expect a novel for teens
to be as complex as others I read, but I found the predictability a bit tired.

This book could be a great spring board, however, for the "in the world but not of the world discussion." Should we surround ourselves with Christians lest we be tempted to stray? I don't agree with the position taken by the parents (and presumably the author) but is certainly a topic worth talking about.

Must Read!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for sending me this e-galley through their Book Sneeze program. Starring Me is a fun, refreshing read about a girl as feisty as her red hair, a cute boy and the chance of a lifetime. This story is loosely based on the biblical story of Issac and Rebekah and is a companion novel to McGee's debut, First Date, (where we first meet Kara).

Kara McCormick was born to perform and while she didn't win the boy on The Book of Love, she came away with an even better prize in her new best friend Addy. The girls have a lot in common but the one thing they don't share is Addy's belief in God. Kara doesn't see the need for Him in her life even though she's seen Him work in Addy's. All that changes when Kara gets the chance to audition for a new teen sketch comedy show, convinced it's her ticket to making her dreams come true. When things don't go as smoothly as she expected, she'll discover that God works in our lives whether we acknowledge Him or not. Kara also gets a lesson about what's really important and the meaning of real love - the kind that's all consuming and never ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kara! She's straightforward, selfless and laugh-out-loud funny. She shows integrity and an openness to what Addy and several others have to say. There's a sweetness to the friendship she develops with Chad and parents of younger readers have nothing to worry about. The idea of courtship; not dating until you're serious about finding a lifelong partner is addressed with Kara and Addy discussing the pros and cons of bouncing from one relationship to the next.

Krista McGee is one of the few Christian authors I've found who is able to share a message of love, forgiveness and grace without sounding preachy or cheesy. McGee's characters are believable and relateable. I'm a Christian and I don't enjoy reading stories where everything is over the top or with characters who are too "perfect".

There's also a Q&A in the back for small groups or book club discussions.
