About the Author
Mike Grigsby has been involved in marketing science for over 25 years. He was marketing research director at Millward Brown and has held leadership positions at Hewlett-Packard and the Gap. With a wealth of practitioner experience at the forefront of marketing science and data analytics, he now heads up the strategic retail analysis practice at Targetbase. He is also known for his academic work, having written articles for academic and trade journals, and currently teaches at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is a regular speaker at trade conventions and seminars.

Ok for learning about marketing, but author's knowlege of statistics seems poor

I have a statistics background and am about to start a marketing job, so wanted to learn about how stats are applied to marketing. While the book helped me in this respect, the author's stats understanding seemed surprisingly poor. Couple of examples: (1) he describes 'unsupervised learning' as techniques where the analyst has no input into the algorithm, versus 'supervised learning' as techniques where the analyst has input (in reality unsupervised learning just means no response variable gets specified - this is pretty basic stuff). (2) he explains that marketing analytics is about 'quantifying causality', and that 'he doesn't want to hear that correlation is not causality'. Wow, that is bad advice. Very few of the techniques he describes do any more that modelling correlations, and anyone using them should *always* have in the back of their mind that 'correlation does not imply causation'.

These are two examples of bad/misleading advice from a book that had many more.

If you know about stats and can take his statistical advice with a grain of salt, then this book is ok for learning about how to apply stats to marketing problems (although you would do far better to read the less concise but far more informative 'Data Science for Business' by Provost and Fawcett). If you don't know about stats then this book is a risky way to learn. You'll end up learning some misinformation along the way.

A great resource that will be used over and over again.

As someone who loves social media and runs my own blog with no prior marketing experience, I found this book to be a valuable tool in understanding the fundamentals of marketing. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy this book was to read and understand. I also liked the examples provided to measure your marketing efforts. A great resource that I will be using again and again.

Oh, what a book! So much is crammed inside something so small, providing a great overview to the marketing newcomer and an aide memoire (or more) to the experienced executive – a real cramming guide to marketing analytics and marketing science no less.

Think of this book as a tasting menu at a high-end restaurant. Statistics, consumer behaviour, modelling and analysis, targeting, purchasing strategies, relationships, segmentation, marketing research, analytics … the list goes on.

Lots of tools to deploy when you face real-world marketing challenges, a quick how-to guide and for those who are a little older, an embarrassment-free way of gaining current knowledge without admitting you might be a tad rusty. The author has managed to balance the needs of both beginner and more experienced marketing pro at the same time, serving up an accessible, refreshing read that neither patronises or bamboozles. The book draws you in and the author was responsible for a unplanned splashing of coffee as this reviewer snorted at some of the humour (“Marketing science is not an oxymoron (like military intelligence, happily married or jumbo shrimp) but is a necessary (although not sufficient) part of marketing strategy”). You can sense the author was probably enjoying himself when writing this book, coming across as a razor-sharp sort of guy who you would not object being “trapped” next to at one of those interminable conference luncheons.

The price, considering what you are getting, is a steal. It is one of those books that you can read several times, building on your knowledge as you go on; dipping in and out as needed or taking a longer, sequential read. A detailed index ably assists the book’s “quick-reference” function for the times when you’ve forgotten the difference between mean, medium and mode or how to pull out data from your analytical modelling structure.

This is a book that will find and retain a place on this reviewer’s shelf; it might not be consulted daily but like a safety belt in your car, it can be a comfort to know that it is there, protecting you, just in case…

You may go to hell for this book, but it's really good.

Sex, swearing, nudity, girl-on-girl kissing, and all sorts of thing that the local neo-conservatives will probably think damn you to hell. This takes place in Iowa - wonder if the GOP candidates will have to comment on it before the Iowa caucus? SJ Adams is really Adam Selzer, whose books have been challenged before. This is WAY edgier than his other ones, but it's funny, though-provoking, and has a lot of heart. Great book for weirdos, geeks, and teenagers who are dealing with questions about faith and religion. Aren't they all?

According to the good folks at The American Heritage Dictionary, a spark is "an incandescent particle," "a glistening particle of something, as metal," or "a flash of light; especially, a flash produced by electric discharge." But according to Emma and Tim, two high school misfits in Des Moines, Iowa, a spark is the "spark of blue" that everyone has inside of them , given by Blueda, visible only to those practicing Bluedaism, and capable of creating amazing things if it encounters a complementary spark of blue in someone else. This made-up religion of the two best friends is the fulcrum of the novel and the result of both of their decisions to kick destructive habits (eating disorders for Emma and drinking for Tom).

A shy teen, Debbie Woodlawn (and her religion) is the complete opposite of Emma and Tom. Since middle school, she has attended Active Christian Teens with her best friend, Lisa, a conservative Christian. And she's also watched hour upon hour of Full House reruns with her, eaten with her, hung out with her, watched movies with her . . . and pretended to like boys with her.

Actually, Debbie has secretly harbored a painful crush on Lisa for years, pretending to believe everything they tell her in Active Christian Teens meetings, pretending to like Full House, and hiding her real beliefs and preferences just so she can be around Lisa. When Lisa begins dating the most boring guy in school, Debbie is distraught. But then Emma and Tom step in, inviting Debbie on a $5 holy quest¯an introduction to Bluedaism. From the beginning of the quest onwards, Sparks is a roller coaster ride. Everything imaginable happens, from meeting bowling alley skanks and praying, to naked angels on tricycles.

If any of this sounds fun, that's because it is. Sparks is, quite simply, a fun read. The trio of Bluedists go on side trips and adventures on their way to helping Debbie express her love for Lisa, and each one is more ridiculous than the last. This book is definitely a page turner, if only because you want to read what incredibly crazy thing Debbie, Emma, and Tom are going to do next. And you'll definitely know what they're doing, because S.J. Adams's descriptions are so vivid and precise it feels like you're reading in Technicolor. The plot is so fast-paced and surprising that even if you know how the story's going to end up, you're willing to suspend disbelief and go along for the ride.

And by chapter three, you will pretty much know how the story's going to end up. Sure, there are some minor hiccups along the way, but for the most part, the plot follows the typical young adult hero template. Except this time it's not a young girl during the Holocaust or an Indian student attending Harvard, but a teenaged lesbian in love with her best friend.

Basically, don't look to Sparks to stir up deep thoughts. First off, books aren't the best tools for stirring (I'd suggest a spoon), and secondly, it's not going to challenge any of your assumptions, broaden any of your horizons, or rock any of your socks. What I can guarantee it will do is make you laugh¯and kind of want to go on a holy Bluedist quest yourself. So grab Sparks if you're headed for the beach or a long plane ride, and revel in irreverence.

I loved loved loved this book. I know, how many times can I say love? Seriously, it was fresh, funny and believable in all the best ways without falling back on stereotypes or biphobia, the way most teen lesbian novels often do. It made me laugh and it made me frustrated, but that's the mark of a good book, is it not?

About the Author
Janet Gonzalez-Mena has been involved in Early Childhood Education since the beginning of Head Start in the 1960’s. She has taught both children and adults in a variety of programs including Head Start, child care, parent education and Early Childhood Education programs in community college. She has written three textbooks and a large number of supplementary texts.

About the Author
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Elizabeth is the middle of three sisters.

The Knox family moved around a number of times during Elizabeth s childhood. They lived in Pomare, Wadestown, Waikanae, and Paremata. The sisters were close, and always played imaginary games. By the time Elizabeth was eleven, the games had become one game, an ongoing saga set in another world -- a game she shared with her sisters and several friends. One day, when Elizabeth was sixteen, her father interrupted a discussion the girls were having about the possible results of a secret treaty and said, I hope you re writing some of this down. The idea hadn t occurred to Elizabeth before, and she thought it was a very good one. She, her sisters, and friends began writing letters between their characters and stories about them. Elizabeth enjoyed writing and decided that this -- writing fiction -- was what she wanted to do with her life.

When Elizabeth left her secondary school, Tawa College, which she attended from 1972 to 1976, she took a job as a clerk in the Inland Revenue department in Porirua. While workmates her age were saving for cars, weddings, and overseas travel, Elizabeth saved in order to take eight months off work and write a novel. This first novel, "One Too Many Lives", completed when she was nineteen, was not to be published (though there was kind interest from a number of publishers in New Zealand and the UK). Again Elizabeth went back to work to save money, and at twenty-two took another year off and wrote another novel, "Salamander", which she disliked and put away.

In 1983, Elizabeth went to Victoria University and began a degree in English literature. In 1984 she took Bill Manhire s Original Composition course and began writing "After Z-Hour". Bill Manhire encouraged her to finish it (actually, he told her he d rather see her finish her novel than her degree). "After Z-Hour" was published by Victoria University Press in 1987. The same year, Elizabeth graduated from Victoria University with a B.A. in English literature and was awarded the ICI Young Writers Bursary (now the Louis Johnson Bursary).

Elizabeth Knox has been a full-time writer since 1997. She has published eight novels and three autobiographical novellas. Her best-known book is "The Vintner s Luck", which won the Deutz Medal for fiction in the 1999 Montana New Zealand Book Awards and the 2001 Tasmania Pacific Region Prize. "The Vintner s Luck" has been published in seven languages and is being made into a film by Niki Caro ("Whale Rider; North Country"). Elizabeth s most recent book, "Daylight", was short-listed for Best Book in the South Pacific & South East Asian Region of the 2004 Commonwealth Writers Prize. Elizabeth s first book for young adults, "Dreamhunter: Book One of the Dreamhunter Duet", was chosen as a White Raven by the International Youth Library, and is the winner of New Zealand s prestigious Esther Glen Medal. Its sequel, "Dreamquake", will be published in March 2007.

Elizabeth lives in Wellington with her husband, Fergus Barrowman, and their son, Jack.

The Angel's Cut, a captivating sequel

The Angel's Cut is Elizabeth Knox's sequel to her novel, The Vintner's Luck. Zas, the de-winged angel from the Vintner's luck, has outlived his former lover, Jobran, and the new novel finds him in a new century involved in early flight, on a German Zeppelin during WWI on a bombing raid heading to England. The novel follows Zas' life journey as he yearns for his former contact with the angelic aerial world by becoming a stunt pilot and getting involved in the early Hollywood movie community in the 1920's. He rooms with a sought after female screen writer, has an affair with one of Hollywood's most successful but deeply troubled directors who also builds advanced design airplanes during the 1920's. Zas' peculiar and alien character perplexes people. He hides his alien nature by keeping his scars of his wing-ectomy hidden, and his journey as an immortal among mortals is fascinating and didactic. Knox's writing is touching, moving, and insightful with a clear and efficient use of the language. The emotions and anguish are clearly communicated of the turmoil experienced by Zas and the other characters in this story as well as a look inside the Hollywood of the 1920's that hits home as very real and immediate. You will not be disappointed but I suggest you read The Vintner's Luck first.

Not a patch on the original, sadly.

The Vinter's Luck is one of my favourite novels of all time: gorgeous, dark, scandalous, salacious, intoxicating and heretical. This one just never gets me interested, never draws me in, never makes me care...it never gets off the ground.

The device of structuring the novel around winemaking terms worked so much better than structuring it around movies; I don't really know why. Easily the best bit is the epilogue, but apart from that this one is just lumpen.

If you read and loved The Vintner's Luck then you are going to read this obviously...but you probably won't enjoy it as much. Sorry.
