Well, it is certainly worth $8

Adding Single Sign-On functionality to an existing EBS instance is not for the faint of heart. There are well written notes produced by Oracle, but they tend to be very general and don't cover any of the specifics for installing the complex fusion middleware stack and certainly do not offer tutorials on any of the basics. If you are doing an implementation like this for the first time, this book is worth $8, but this is not a high quality text. This is mostly a collection of screenshots and scribblenotes for a very old implementation that were printed as a PDF and then made harder to access via the Amazon DRM process. If you have nothing else to go by, it is certainly a comfort to at least glance over at another consultant's notes to see what one implementation looked like when it went well. Fortunately, Oracle is working to streamline some of the accident prone tedium with scripting tools.

Keep in mind that the current EBS 12.1 version is 12.1.3 and EBS 12.2 is already generally available. The Access Manager and OID components have also changed over the past two years. This is certainly no O'Reilly book, but then again there is no O'Reilly book that fills in this niche like this PDF book does.

a wonderful neglected compendium of writers

Unless there is reincarnation I will not have time to read what interests me. First, Amazon's listing lacks specifics. The Gay & Lesbian Literary Companion was structured by two women: Sharon Malinowski and Christa Brelin. Malcolm Boyd was a Consulting Editor and wrote the foreword.

Each of the 45 writers in this compendium has an essay by a different writer/scholar. The sections have a Personal Stats area. The editors list Boyd as "an American theologian, novelist, playwright and editor". It moves on to specify: birth, education, partnerships, career et al. Later each section contains a list of the major works. There are several photos of all the writers. There is a fine photo of Malcolm Boyd with his life partner Mark Thompson. The editors always include a long sample of a story or essay or novel.

Malinowski and Brelin have an excellent mix of the famous writers such as James Baldwin and Virginia Woolf as well as equally detailed areas about people I didn't know: Radclyffe Hall, a British woman who wrote five volumes of poetry and one celebrated novel, The Well of Loneliness.

I am grateful to the editors of this book for bringing many great writers into my life. I have always admired James Baldwin. If you read The Fire Next Time or Nobody Knows My Name, you will see what I believe - Baldwin is the American master of non-fiction prose.

My only quibble about this volume is that it doesn't include André Gide or Jean Genet or Marcel Proust. It is, however, a fine collection of literary samples and facts about 45 excellent writers.

A great page-turner of a history book!

While the perspective in this book seems decidedly Protestant, Coffin's focus is on the progress of men out of the stifling opression of freedom in the dark ages (esp.by the Catholic Church)to the freedom we may take for granted today. He tells the stories of various people who were willing to give up everything for the principle of freedom of thought.
On the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre-
"Catherine hastens to Charles' chamber once more. He is sitting in a chair, moody, angry, silent. He has acquiesced in the plan until now; but as the hour for its consummation approaches, is irresolute. It will be so mean to have the old admiral, and others who hace confided in his word, assassinated. Poor weakling that he is, there is still left a little of his better nature. The education that he has received from his mother - that the end always justifies the means - the school of falsehood in which he has been taught, has not quite obliterated all sense of what is right and honorable."
This book reads like a novel, not a history book. It is such a page turner that my children wore out one copy and have begun on another!

History for Homeschooling

Despite what others may have said about this book's qualities regarding homeschooling it remains one of THE best books on the foundation of American culture. The author attempted and succeeded to remain unbiased when writing upon matters of religion (i.e. Roman Catholic Church vs. Protestant Church). However, the obvious wrong done by the Roman Catholic Church during the Roman Inquisition (not just the Spanish) is made quite clear. Yet the author does not leave the Protestant church without some blame, for they did promote violence, wars, and some measure of persecution. The book does accomplish its goal by making the reader understand what liberty is and what it has cost. No homeschooling Christian (or otherwise) child should be without this book.

The Story of Liberty

I read this for pleasure, not for home schooling. It was outstanding! A fast and easy read, easily relating together the events over the past 700 years. Cofing clearly illustrates the slow struggle of the human race towards freedom ... tieing events together in a literary time-line. With such a clear conception of the tyrrants of the past, one can't help but draw parallels with contemporary tyrrants. I wish I had read this when I was in school. I am recommending it to all of my friends.
