Intimidating, but good

This is an excellent DVD, but there are a few minor negatives. Compared to his earlier VHS "lesson," (An Intimate Lesson w/TR) this one was more difficult for me to follow because Tony isn't talking to you, the viewer. He's talking to Happy Traum. This makes it a little more difficult to match with the tablature because Tony will do a variation after Happy asks a question. The older VHS is straight forward - we're going to learn this one now. This new DVD really is like sitting in on two musicians playing around but not noticing you're there. The pieces are more difficult than the older video as well - I find myself very intimidated by how fast and clean he plays these more complex tunes - but that may be because I haven't learned them yet!!! Other than those nitpicks, it's always great to get a closeup view of just what in the world Tony's doing, hear stories, listen to that amazing old Martin and his very impressive newer Santa Cruz. And the ability to slow forward and easily rewind the DVD is magnificent. The selection of tunes is very good, the audio quality is excellent and the camera work is very good. Now if I could just get Tony to come to my house and teach me this stuff . . .

Great Stuff

This dvd is a great buy. It is priceless,really. You feel you are in Tony's living room, hanging out. The tab is good too. He talks about his technique, equipment, and feelings behind what he plays. He breaks down several songs, including Little Sadie and Jeruslem Ridge. Well worth the price of a couple of lessons.

Awesome book!

I still can't play worth a darned but as a amateur luthier, my friends and family are amazed at how well I can make their "piece of junk" guitars sounds awesome with the skills learned in this book. I had a half-body Takamine acoustic and an off-brand electric guitar that were hard to play and made me want to quit with sore fingers. The electric had a bad buzz on the high-e string that would never go away and was ruining my score on RockSmith PS3. This book gave me the skills to solve the problems!

Although the book is titled for "Electric Guitar", many of the tools and techniques are applicable to acoustics as well. Highly recommend for anyone who 'hates' their guitars action. One of my "junk" electric guitars (purchased from a pawn shop and restrung) was so hated by friends and family for it's every-string-is-different height, action and playability that I almost threw it away. I used the techniques in this book and spent an afternoon completely re-tuned, corrected the intonation and re-strung it, adjusted the action and now that "junk" guitar is the go-to instrument for anyone who visits and wants to play!

This book is a must-have for every guitarist!

An amazing bargain. If you want to set up your guitar, this is the book to buy.

I have been playing guitar for about 26 years at this point and have always wanted to know how to set up my guitars. It costs at least $40 to have it professionally done, but the thorough information in this book should be enough. Actually, way more than enough. A lot of other information is covered in this book, including Dan Erlewine's opinions on bridges, tremolos, how to evaluate a new guitar for damage and what needs to be done in a set up, and a lot more. The book even includes a DVD and pop out cardboard radius gauges to help with setup! For just over $20 new! I've been a fan of StewMac(Stewart MacDonald) for a long time. Dan Erlewine has written books for them and specializes in new product development, including designing new guitar tools. He's a definite master luthier, and his opinions are objective, formed through years of hands on experience. His writing style is also easy to follow, and there are good diagrams and photos to illustrate what he's talking about. I've done some work on guitars before including refinishing a guitar, rewiring a 1965 Fender Mustang, adjusting bridge heights and truss rods, but this book makes me realize how much more there is to know. I can't wait to use this information to set up my 60s Silvertone Jupiter and Harmony Bobkat.
