Quirky and delightful

Rarely can such an eclectic range of adjectives apply to one small book. Highly enjoyable comes first, but that must be accompanied by unique, quirky, absurd, delightful and intellectually challenging. Comic strip like in format, it is funny at any level, yet even more so for those with some background in science, literature and history in which the author is clearly conversant. My thought is that a copy of this little gem would sure beat a greeting card for lifting the spirits of a friend.

What a delightful surprise!

When I first received "Fateful Encounters," I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was intrigued by the notion of "14 of the World's Shortest Graphic Novels." What a delight! From "Adventures in Reading" to "The Awful Truth" and, my favorite, "Turf Grasses," "Fateful Encounters" offers a wry, witty and sometimes twisted view of the world through Mr. Van Dine's eyes. I liked this so much, I bought a few more as gifts for friends. Highly recommend for anyone looking to laugh.

About the Author
Ray V. Herren has been actively involved in agriculture for most of his life. He grew up on a diversified farm, where he played a major role in the production of livestock. He obtained a bachelor of science degree in agricultural education from Auburn University, a master's degree in agribusiness education from Alabama A & M, and a doctorate in vocational education (with an emphasis in agricultural education) from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Herren has taught at Virginia Tech, Oregon State University, and the University of Georgia in Athens, where he recently retired as head of the Department of Agriculture Leadership, Education, and Communication. In addition to being a national leader in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni organization, he has served on numerous committees from the local to international level, including a national task force to develop FFA programs for middle school and the National Committee for Career Development Events. His prolific scholarly activity includes 26 journal articles, 51 invited or refereed presentations, and 12 books and manuals. He has also earned several awards for his commitment to service, as well as UGA's prestigious College of Education Outstanding Teaching Award.

Basic information, not always correct

This book it a textbook for my college AGR 157 class, Introduction to Agricultural Mechanics. It is very basic, a type of textbook I would have expected to be associated with a eighth or ninth grade shop or ag class. Some terms and tool names are not correct, or conflict with the industry standard. For example, it uses the term "nut runners" for a tool that Craftman, Snap-On, Grainger, McMaster-Carr and all the industrial mechanics I've worked with call "nut drivers". The self evaluation questions at the end of each chapter have items that do not directly correlate with the given text. If one did not have familiar knowledge with the subject aready, these evaluations could be confusing at best. Some of the safety colors it says are used conflict with the industry standard. It says black and yellow are used for radiation, which is not true, yellow and magenta are the radiation colors. We use black and yellow for non forklift traffic area boundaries. One positive of this book is that it does have good, and clearly, written procedures for the use of the equipment in which each chapter describes.

i have this book and have used it so much that i have worn it out, it is falling apart, i want another one, receipes are great,usefull information. i pretty much started out with this book, it was my first bread making book and i love the receipes as do the rest of my family. i hope that i can find a copy (new) soon

Farm Journal's Homemade Breads

I love this book. I have had it for a long time. In fact I am baking biscuits, as I type, right now. I have made so many breads with this book. I am partial to the sweet breads. My grandson came over to my house, and we made sweet rolls while I cooked dinner. The rolls never got to the table. He ate them, and when his mom came over, she finished them all up. Next time I'll make more than one batch. If you love homemade breads this book is for you.

Mom uses the book so much it is falling apart

I would like to order this book for my Mother. She makes the best bread, pies, & pizza dough from the recipes in this book. I hope they publish it again. Her's is falling apart. It is in about 5 pieces and she still manages to find her favorite recipes, but I can't find her recipes. I want a copy for myself so I can make great bread like her. I would recommend this to anyone who has just started making breads or to someone who has been making bread for years.

Dolby (The Trouble Boy) puts his own prep school experience to fine use in his second novel, which chronicles the travails of Ethan Whitley, the smart but insecure 17-year-old son of Stanford professors, who spends his senior (or sixth form) year at Berkley Academy, an elite co-ed boarding school in Massachusetts. Todd Eldon, a classmate who befriends Ethan, introduces him to a world of wealth and privilege. Such moments as the awestruck Ethan's reaction to Todd's family's Manhattan apartment (was that really a Miró, he wondered, in the living room?) and how Todd's nouveau riche mother, an author of popular fiction, decorates the place for Christmas are beautifully observed. Hannah McClellan, a progressive English teacher with a mysterious past, also cultivates Ethan. As the story darkens, the reader expects the axe to fall at any moment. That it never does may annoy some, but most will be gratified that kind fate alone saves the principal characters from their own foolishness. This isn't a novel for people who want to know what a prep school is like; rather, it's a reminder how close disaster always is when you're 17. (Jan.)

Suspenseful Coming-of-Age Tale

This book really took me by surprise.

Four years ago, I read Dolby's first novel, THE TROUBLE BOY, and while I enjoyed it, felt that it hewed so closely to much of what's already out there in gay literature that it failed to leave a lasting impression. But with THE SIXTH FORM Dolby makes a quantum leap forward.

The story centers on the tangled relationships of three people over the course of one term at a posh New England prep school - Todd, the gay son of a wealthy New York author (in the vein of Danielle Steele or Jackie Collins), Ethan, the brainy [and straight] son of two middle class California intellectuals and Hannah, the unorthodox bohemian teacher who lures them into her orbit with her seemingly freewheeling attitude and her homebaked goodies. Most people might roll their eyes when they see that this is a "gay" novel that takes place in a private boarding school. And certaintly, the opportunity for cliches abound, but these are no stereotypes; they're complicated, down-to-earth characters with believable problems.

Dolby gives the reader access to both Todd and Ethan's points of view, but lets Hannah's motives remain opaque. And because of this, I found myself drawn to her character in the same way the boys are - hungrily snatching at clues to her mysterious and tragic past. I'll admit to being impressed that a gay male writer took the time to create a three dimensional female character - even if she is clinging, deluded and predatory. It totally worked for me!

There's a lot of really good stuff here. Even the most minor secondary characters seem leap off the page - recognizable and fully formed. Todd's MILF-y mom and n'er-do-well dad, Ethan's saintly mother being devoured by disease, even the semi-closeted lesbian couple who teach at the school. The dialogue is very naturalistic. The interractions between characters are always revealing and enjoyable to read. Each scene moves along at a leisurely pace, but as a whole the book still reads quickly. And the story itself is a unique combination of love triangle (of sorts), mild suspense and coming of age.

Accurate with a new twist

A new England preppy who has read many prep school novels, I rate Dolby's as one of the very best. This novel far surpasses Curtis Satterfield's Prep. Dolby spends less time making fun of the so-called upper crust world and more time looking at the emotions of boarding school students. The issues of loneliness, abandonment of parents, the single teacher who seeks solace in students....all are so true to life. Furthermore, Dolby takes on a new perspective of boys coming to grips with their own sexuality and dealing with their innocence, identity and confusion. The boy meets girl, the rich girl/poor boy themes are refreshingly left out. Boarding school creates intense bonds. Dolby reveals them in a heart felt and accuarte fashion. Bravo!

Coming-of-age at a New England prep school

Seventeen year old Ethan Whitley is allowed to escape his California home, where his mother is battling cancer, by being sent to attend his senior year of high school at the prestigious Berkley Academy in Massachusetts. Once there, the somewhat shy and artistic Ethan meets Todd Eldon, an outgoing student from a rich Manhattan home, and Hannah McClellan, an English teacher who befriends both he and Tood, inviting them often to her home. Todd is immediately attracted to Ethan, which confuses him, as he always condidered himself to be heterosexual. He attempts to see if Ethan feels the same way, trying to spend as much time together as possible, until an impulsive action threatens to damage their friendship and risk "outing" him to his homophobic prep school peers. Meanwhile, Ethan becomes closer and closer to Hannah, who offers encouragement and attention to the pensive young man, and quickly oversteps the bonds that should exist between student and teacher.

In his second novel (after "The Trouble Boy"), Tom Dolby provides a classic coming-of-age tale, based loosely on his own experiences at a New England prep school. His characterizations of Ethan, Todd and Hannah are infused with realism and great attention to detail, allowing the reader to feel as if he or she comes to know them as they knew each other. Ethan's misgivings about being away from his ill mother, and his fear of what the future might hold for him in terms of a career as well as relationships, are both handled with delicate skill by a talented author, as is the tale of Todd's slowly accepting the fact that he is gay. A beautiful read, which I give five stars out of five.

Invaluable resource for families of children with language delays, regardless of reason for delay

This book is such a great resource for helping families of late-talking children navigate the various paths from diagnosis through treatment, education, and beyond school. Being a parent of a late talker, and a late talker himself, this book by Dr. Camarata gives a credibility and perspective that is much appreciated and underrepresented in the current literature on this topic. I have been to the Late Talker's Clinic in Nashville, and they were the only ones after a long line of clinicians to give us a proper diagnosis that fit for our son. Dr. Camarata and his wife are tireless advocates for late- talking kids, and have bettered the lives of so many families and children through their guidance and support. This book finally brings the knowledge and support to a format accessible to all families in need. This book will help you to help your late-talking kid, and take the reins back from the "experts" to ensure the best decisions and resources are being utilised. I especially recommend this book if you feel like your child's diagnosis does not fit, you're having battles with a teacher or your school, or you feel like no one "get's it".

Late- Talking Children: A Symptom or a Stage? - I want to give this book to everyone

I have been waiting for this book to come out and wasn't disappointed. I now want to buy copies for everyone that comes in contact with my late talking son (because I'm not giving up my copy!) This includes: Doctors, therapists, school officials, nosey neighbors, busy-body aunts and other "experts" on why my child is a late talker. This book can be used as a road map on where and how to get the appropriate treatment for your child. The key take away for me was that we as parents know our children best and it's imperative that we question the "experts"- as they are often times not experts at all. While some are well meaning, many are working from old play-books- that not only don't help our speech delayed children, but can seriously hurt them.

Better Than the Movie

Robert Benchley’s father was a novelist, his grandfather was a humorist. He was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from Harvard, served in the Marines, then became a reporter for the ‘Washington Post’. He worked as an editor of ‘Newsweek’, a speech writer for President L. B. Johnson, and a television commentator. He wrote about sharks and other topics for many magazines. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and children. This 1974 novel was a best-seller and was adapted to a highly successful 1975 movie. This is a horror story that doesn’t use a supernatural creature. A great white shark arrives at a summer resort and fishing village then begins feeding on mammals. But his prey are not the calorie rich pinnipeds! This causes a political problem for the rulers of this town. Warn people about a shark and the tourists will stay away, an important economic resource for this small town. Doing nothing could create a liability.

A couple go on the beach at night. The woman goes for a swim, she is attacked by a great fish! Her absence results in a call to the police. [Never swim in the ocean after dusk, this is feeding time for sharks.] Police Chief Brody is awakened at home. [The descriptions about Brody and his wife tells about their society; these were omitted in the movie. This is interesting but unneeded in an action movie. You wonder who the author used an example. Will a marriage between people from different classes work? It does in this novel. Can Ellen find happiness as a small town housewife, or miss urban New York City society?] The police find the remains of the missing woman on the beach! The coroner said it was a big shark. The local town needs a successful summer season for year-long prosperity. Even in good years 30% of the families went on relief in winter. [Why didn’t they move to a more prosperous area?]

Chapter 3 tells about events in this small town. The New York businessman who owned the local newspaper banned the story. Will economics suppress the news? Yes, just as it does in bigger cities. A young boy paddles his raft into the calm ocean. Suddenly he disappears! Reporters from big city newspapers were there. Then there is another attack on an old man! A fisherman is missing from his boat at sea. Very strange. Ellen makes a luncheon date with Matt (Chapter 8). The Board of Selectmen held a meeting about reopening the beaches. Brody learns the name of Vaughn’s partner and his hold on him!

Brody hires Quint to find and kill the shark, $400 a day cash in advance. The second day they see the shark, it’s a big one! Quint shoots at it with his M-1 Garand, no effect. The next day they see the shark close to the boat. Hooper has a shark cage and wants to make a movie about this big shark. Is this a bad career move? Quint and Brody call it a day and return to port. This time the shark attacks the boat! Quint throws harpoons into its body, ropes are tied to barrels. Then it jumped onto the stern, water poured into the boat! Quint’s foot is snarled in the rope from the harpoon and he is pulled overboard. The boat began to sink. So too the shark with the body of Quint! Brody used a seat cushion as a flotation device and swims to shore.

This is a very interesting story that holds your interest until the end. It is not as dramatic as the movie version, which also changed the story to eliminate some details and provided a happier ending. The successful movie had two sequels, and an imitator that used a killer whale.

Now the older disciplines of detection theory and coding theory have been generalized and applied to the point where it is hard to tell where these end and the theories of signal design and modulation begin. Despite our emphasis on the events of the last ten years, we have included all the traditional topics of digital phase modulation. Signal space concepts are developed, as are simple phase-shift-keyed and pulse-shaped modulations; receiver structures are discussed, from the simple linear receiver to the Viterbi algorithm; the effects of channel filtering and of hardlimiting are described. The volume thus serves well as a pedagogical book for research engineers in industry and second-year graduate students in communications engineering. The production of a manageable book required that many topics be left out.

This text deals with continuous-phase modulation from several important angles --- CPM design based on maximization of the minimum Euclidean distance and spectral bandwidth; analysis of various approaches of optimum and suboptimum CPM demodulation, etc.
